The North Zulch men’s basketball team defeated Richards for the second time in a week Friday in a matchup that determined the final playoff slot from 1A District 29. The Bulldogs placed third in the district with the win to advance to a Bi-District matchup with Waelder that will likely take place Saturday.

The North Zulch women’s basketball team won their first playoff game in five years Thursday with a 60-38 Bi-District victory over Nordheim in Flatonia. The Lady Bulldogs’ Area matchup against McMullen County has been delayed until Saturday as a result of the winter weather.

Cap: Both Madisonville soccer squads dropped district matchups to Palestine Feb. 9. All of their scheduled bouts have since been canceled due to the winter weather, including district matchups against Westwood, Livingston and Crockett. Free COVID testing will be available at the Bedias Civic Center next Tuesday, Feb. 23, through Thursday, Feb. 25, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., each day. No appointment is needed for the drive-through testing. Bring a photo I.D., testing is free of charge.

Pitcher Kasey Williamson is feeling healthy after dealing with an elbow ailment during the fall. The Madisonville High School graduate said he began the University of Texas at Tyler baseball season recovering from an elbow strain.

Sherri Lewing was taken into custody Feb. 10 while her 16-year-old daughter, who she unlawfully removed from a North Zulch foster home earlier that week along with two other minors, was located safely by the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.
