U.S. Representative Kevin Brady announced Wednesday he will retire from the House at the end of his current term after serving Texas’s 8th congressional district for over two decades. Brady was reelected to his 13th and final term in November.

“I set out to give my constituents the representation you deserve, the effectiveness you want and the economic freedom you need,” said Brady at The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce Economic Outlook Conference Wednesday, where he made the announcement. “I hope I delivered. It is a remarkable privilege to work for you in the U.S. House of Representatives.”

Brady became just the third Texan in history to chair the House Ways and Means Committee, which he led from 2015-19 while Republicans controlled the House. He currently remains the committee’s ranking minority member.

“I love this job,” said Brady. “And thanks to incredible lawmakers I’ve worked with in Congress and the White House, I’ve been fortunate to do big things for our country.”

Brady went on to say he has not lost faith in the American political system.

“I work with some of the most dedicated people in the nation — talented, hardworking and serious about their responsibilities — in both parties,” said Brady. “And after 25 years in the nation’s Capitol I haven’t yet seen a problem we can’t solve or move past. Not one. Especially when we put our best ideas and intentions together.”

Brady was facing a term limit as the top Republican in the House Ways and Means Committee since the party limits committee leadership to six years.

“Our committee leader term limits ensure lawmakers who work hard and effectively have the opportunity to lead and bring fresh ideas to our committee work,” said Brady, who admitted the term limit played “some” role in his decision. “It’s a good thing. And the great news is that our Ways and Means Committee is incredibly talented. I am confident about its future.”

In his speech, Brady went on to list some of his proudest achievements in the position:

“I am proud to have worked with (former President Donald Trump) and lawmakers from both parties to redesign America’s broken tax code, reform the IRS, pass the new US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement, reform America’s retirement system, end the unfair ObamaCare individual mandate and its harmful taxes, and sign into law a historic national ban on surprise medical bills,” said Brady. “And we preserved my first success as chairman: negotiating for (former Speaker of the House Paul Ryan) to put and end to the 40-year ban on selling U.S. crude oil oversees.”

His final term will come to an end in January of 2023.

“In the end, I will leave Congress the way I entered it,” said Brady. “With the absolute belief that we are a remarkable nation — the greatest in history.”
