A spokeswoman from the Texas Animal Health Commission said that, so far, nothing indicates that there are reported cases of avian influenza in the southern part of the state, including the Brazos Valley.

The Madison County Fair Association elected its new Board of Directors Tuesday, June 4, at the Madison County Fairgrounds. Voters had to choose from nine candidates, with only five available seats on the board.

The Madisonville Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees held their regular meeting on Monday, June 10. The board members reviewed some developments within the school district and listened to reports from Superintendent Dr. Keith West and his staff while setting plans in motion for the upcoming term.

This commissioners court meeting Tuesday, June 11, signified the first meeting for Steve Parrish, now commissioner over Precinct 1, after the formal resignation of Ken Starr. The first discussion on the action item side of the agenda was the abolishment of the Salary Review Committee and the removal of all references to it from the Madison County Personnel Policy, effective immediately.

Madisonville couple Angelique and Pedro Guillen are living their own personal nightmare in what has become their home- awayfrom- home at Texas Children’s Hospital in the Houston Medical Center. Sunday, June 2, their now 20-month-old son Isaac sustained a traumatic brain injury in what is believed to be an attempt to climb into, or a fall from, the bed of his father’s pickup truck.

In the last local race in Madison County for the election cycle this year, Steve Parrish emerged victorious in the Precinct 1 County Commissioner runoff election on Tuesday, May 28. Parrish received 223 votes, while the incumbent and his opponent, Billy McNutt, received 106 from the residents of precinct 1.

Governor Greg Abbott announced Tuesday, May 28, that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission received federal approval, allowing Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipients affected by recent storms in the state to purchase hot foods and readyto- eat meals with their benefits.

As hurricane season officially began on Monday, June 1, Madison County Emergency Management urges residents to prepare for whatever may happen during the following months. “We always think that hurricanes are coastal issues in Madison County, but that couldn’t be further from the truth,” said Shelly Butts, director of Madison County Emergency Management.
