Bethel Cemetery Holds Madison County History

Body
Bethel Cemetery lies in Grimes County, just south of our county line. It has a state historical marker and is older than Madison County, which was created from Grimes, Leon, and Walker counties and by the State legislature on January 27, 1853, and organized in August 1854. Dates are illegible on some Bethel gravestones, but John Hope Byers was buried there, having lived 1802-1850. Obviously 1850 preceded 1853.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Body
I must admit, I bristled upon hearing the paper was doing a feature on local first responders titles, “Hometown Heroes.” While I found it thoughtful that the community was interested in getting to know their local emergency personnel, I still found that the use of the word, “hero” troubled me.

Why Bedias Here?

Body
Please know that Bedias folks’ items are welcome in our Madison County Champions exhibit. Yes, we know that Bedias lies in Grimes County, but it’s part of our culture here. For years it had its own school, with the school mascot an alligator. A “stuffed” alligator was displayed in that old gym.
