City Council awarded a nearly $608,000 contract July 13 to repair five Madisonville streets after months spent chasing down easement signatures. Rebel Contractors Inc., based out of Willis, was the low bidder out of five, coming in about $237,000 under the engineer’s $845,000 estimate.

Madison County commissioners appointed Sheriff Bobby Adams the local rabies control authority July 14 after rejecting two earlier versions of the order this summer. The Madison County Rabies Control Order passed without opposition, naming Adams or his designee under state code.

BEDIAS — A man who shot and killed another during a disturbance Saturday afternoon in Bedias called 911 to report the incident, authorities said. Grimes County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded about 5:12 p.m.

A Houston man died and five others were injured last week after a car traveling the wrong way struck a pickup head-on along the Interstate 45 frontage road, according to the Department of Public Safety. The crash occurred about 8:45 p.m.

Six Madisonville FFA members walked the stage at the Texas FFA state convention in Fort Worth to receive their Lone Star FFA Degrees, one of the highest honors the Texas FFA Association awards. Each member was presented the degree by Texas FFA State President Riley Farris, a Madisonville FFA member.

A new 10-lot subdivision is coming to FM 2158 and Arkansas Road near Midway after commissioners approved both plats for Songbird Acres July 14. The subdivision divides 16.71 acres in the James Mitchell Survey into lots ranging from 1.13 acres to 10.49 acres.

A Prairie View A&M University program will pay Madison County producers up to $700 per acre while testing their soil for free. The Smart Precision Agriculture program, funded through a USDA grant, is open to landowners running a half acre to 20 acres of vegetables, row crops, hay or livestock.
