Council moves city elections to November

City Council voted last week to push Madisonville’s general elections back to November, a change officials said could help raise voter turnout and cut costs. The council approved May 11 shifting the general election for council members from the May uniform election date to the November uniform election date in odd-numbered years.

Brush pile burn escapes containment at Willowhole Cemetery

NORTH ZULCH — A controlled brush pile burn on the back acreage of Willowhole Cemetery slipped containment Tuesday and burned about 1.5 acres before North Zulch Volunteer Fire Department crews put it out.

Fourth of July funding up to $10K for 250th

Madison County commissioners May 12 approved $15,000 in Hotel Occupancy Tax funding for two upcoming summer events. Madisonville received $10,000 for its second Fourth of July Celebration at Lake Madison Park, double the $5,000 originally requested.

Council backs three Lake Madison Park projects

Kayak rentals, a fitness court and a concrete trail all win approval The Madisonville City Council voted Monday to bring kayak rentals, an outdoor fitness court and a concrete walking trail to Lake Madison Park. City Manager Kelcey Young brought the kayak rental agreement to the council May 11 and recommended a contract with Whenever Water Sports.

Council hears of first Cowboy Day, summer events

City manager updates council on plans as routine business clears The Madisonville City Council heard plans for the city’s first Cowboy Day and a slate of summer events as it cleared routine business Monday. City Manager Kelcey Young told the council May 11 that the city will hold its first Cowboy Day on July 18 from 2 to 8 p.m.

Police arrest suspect in West Collard Street shooting

Madisonville police arrested a man on a first-degree felony charge after a woman was shot at a home on West Collard Street, according to the Madisonville Police Department.

Officers were dispatched to the residence just before 1 a.m. Thursday on a report of possible shots fired, according to police. They found a woman with a gunshot wound to her upper leg.

Police said the suspect, identified as Arturo Jesus Sosa, had fled the scene in a white pickup.

NORTH ZULCH — Community members will gather in Houston May 13 to honor a North Zulch High School senior placed on life support following a single-vehicle crash last week. Chloe McLain, 17, was traveling south on FM 247 near Harper Lane about 4:11 p.m.

District brings in $81K from outside events

Madisonville Consolidated Independent School District athletic facilities hosted 61 outside events this school year, generating more than $81,000 in rental revenue alone, Athletic Director Rusty Nail told trustees Monday. Nail, invited to speak at the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association conference in June, said the approach has helped cover budget gaps without cutting student programs.
