Downtown Madisonville businesses will soon face new restrictions on signage, storefront aesthetics and trash maintenance after City Council approved a pilot code enforcement district July 13. The Downtown Code Enforcement Overlay District applies to all property in the downtown zoning district, covering the courthouse square from Trinity Street to Cottonwood Street.

Madisonville leaders July 13 adopted a list of 20 goals for fiscal year 202627 and checked off two of them, a butterfly habitat and youth council, before the meeting ended. The goals came from a two-day strategic planning retreat in May, where City Council and executive staff worked through team building exercises, a community tour and a review of past goals.

Wrong-way crash on I-45 kills Houston man

A Houston man died and five other people were hurt when a car traveling the wrong way struck a pickup head-on along the Interstate 45 frontage road near Madisonville, according to the Department of Public Safety.

The crash happened about 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, July 7, near mile marker 144. A 2024 Kia Forte was traveling north in the southbound lanes of the service road when it met a southbound 2004 Ford F-350, Sgt. Justin Ruiz said. Both drivers veered right, and the vehicles collided.

The county has been able to use the cover of the appraisal district for years when taxes climb, but commissioners faced a tough budget reality July 2 and will have to adapt to a shrinking tax base. Early appraisal district estimates show the county’s tax base down about 1.6%, County Judge Clark Osborne told the court during the second of five budget workshops.
