We do have a few proud Bearkat grads in Madison Country besides the Nettles Clan. First, Rodney Poe graduated in August 1969, but his post-graduation plans were short-lived.
Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush and City Manager Camilla Viator announced the Texas General Land Office (GLO) approved $6.5 million in flood mitigation projects to improve wastewater and sewer infrastructure in the City of Madisonville and Madison County.

Trailing by four with 20 seconds remaining in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) National Championship game in Frisco on Sunday, May 16, the Sam Houston State Bearkats rallied to win 23-21 completing a perfect 10-0 season and capturing their first national championship against the number No. 1 ranked South Dakota State Jackrabbits.
Eliza Lazenby has been named Madison County Extension’s new Program Assistant, taking over the role from her mother, Leslie, who held the position for over 12 years. She was hired after completing an eight-week internship with the office, where she excelled in all tasks according to Extension Agent Chadd Caperton.
Madisonville FFA held their annual end of the year banquet in the MHS competition gym Thursday and honored their students for their many accomplishments throughout the 2020-21 school year. The group also named their new chapter officers for the 2021-22 school year.
CHI St. Joseph’s Hospital in Madisonville will be hosting Wellness Wednesdays along with the Madison County Chamber of Commerce in which hospital personnel will educate attendees on particular health categories. The Madisonville CISD Community Education Program will offer a substitute teacher training class beginning Monday, June 14 and lasting through Thursday, June 17, at Madisonville Elementary School. The class will meet from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. in the library. The registration fee is $35.
