The trial of Philip Cameron Carter (42) began Thursday, April 3, after a jury was seated and seven indictments were read to the court, including one for solicitation of capital murder of his ex-wife. The state’s opening statement, delivered by Madison County District Attorney Courtney Cain, portrayed Carter as a man determined to have his former spouse killed.

Madison County Commissioners approved pay increases Tuesday, April 8 for most sheriff ’s deputies, raising entry-level salaries and creating a new pay scale, but leaving out five veteran officers. Commissioners voted unanimously to approve personnel changes that will set starting deputy pay at $53,000 and increase salaries to $57,000 after four years of service.
