The Madisonville women’s basketball team improved to 3-1 in district play with a pair of home victories this week. The Lady Mustangs knocked off Connally 46-30 Friday as well as Robinson Monday by a score of 49-24.

The Madisonville soccer team split a pair of district matchups over the week with a 2-2 (4-3) victory over Livingston in a penalty shootout and a 3-1 loss to Hudson. The Livingston matchup was knotted up at 2-2 before being decided by penalty kicks with both regulation goals scored by Juan Torres. Penalty shootout goals were scored by Torres, Christian Vazquez, Issac Hinojosa and Pablo Sanchez while Alex Torres recorded one blocked shot. The Madisonville men’s basketball team returned to the court after a brief hiatus to open district play Friday and downed Connally, the no. 9 ranked team in 4A, by a score of 62-60 at MHS. The Mustangs remained home Monday and improved to 2-0 in district with a 63-39 win over Robinson.

Both the Madisonville seventh and eighth grade boys basketball squads competed in the Franklin Invitational over the weekend and made runs to the championship game. The eighth grade squad defeated Franklin in the title matchup while the seven graders fell to Franklin. COURTESY PHOTO

Michael Cooper, a candidate for governor on the Democratic ticket in the March primary election, spoke to local voters Saturday at the Senior Center. The Beaumont native, pastor and father of seven is running on education, climate change, criminal justice reform, and more. He stated that education is his top priority, but he spoke of grave concerns for the energy grid across most of our state. Affordable healthcare and voting rights were among the other topics he touched on. Cooper stressed that he’s not pushing to take our guns. A number of local soccer teams gathered at MHS over the weekend for the annual Mustang Classic tournament, which featured pool play on Thursday and Friday before Saturday’s bracket play was postponed due to inclement weather.
