GALA NETTLES Groundhog lovers get ready! Tomorrow is your day! For those of you who aren’t familiar with Punxsutawney Phil, you need to be. This groundhog, who lives on Gobbler’s Knob in Pennsylvania, is a famous weather predictor and probably as good as some of those you watch nightly on TV.

Local boy wins two champion titles

At the Cattleman’s Congress, a national stock show for cattlemen and women in Oklahoma City, Kendel Cleere of Madisonville won the Reserve Champion Shorthorn competition. Afterward, Cleere would press his luck by going to the Fort Worth Stockshow and would win back-to-back with his shorthorn, becoming the Grand Champion Shorthorn at the stock show..

My most recent Musings told about the election of the first officials in Madison County in 1853. Though I gave names of those elected to what offices, I focused mostly on the first Chief Justice, John L. Duke. Today I provide details about the some of the others. Note that some positions required more than one man (in those days only men), just like we still have four County Commissioners today.
