Screwworm returns to Texas

A rural pest wiped out in the United States 60 years ago has returned to Texas, but local officials say Madison County livestock are not in immediate danger.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed the first New World screwworm case June 3 in a calf near La Pryor in Zavala County. Five more cases followed by June 9 — two additional calves in Zavala County, two calves in La Salle County, a goat in Gillespie County and a dog in Lea County, New Mexico.

Madison County hires new Veteran’s Service Officer

During the latest Madison County commissioner’s court on Wednesday, December 14, the commissioners was charged with hiring a new Veteran’s Service Officer. This comes after Danny Singletary retired several months ago, leaving the position open for a new officer to come in and take his place.

The 128 trapped miners

In northern Mexico it had the history of being a dangerous mine but there weren’t many jobs and the area had extreme poverty. As locals would say, “You either go underground or starve.” An explosion and cave-in occurred, and 128 miners were trapped 300 feet below ground.
