MARKER UNVEILED FOR RECONSTRUCTION-ERA LEGISLATOR

Dozens gather Saturday, April 11 for the unveiling of a state historical marker honoring Thomas Beck on the south side of the Madison County Courthouse lawn. Beck represented Madison County in three Texas Legislatures during Reconstruction.

Six generations of Thomas Beck’s family stand beside his state historical marker Saturday, April 11 at the Madison County Courthouse. Beck was born into slavery in Kentucky around 1819 and served three terms in the Texas House representing Madison and Grimes counties.

RESTORED MARKER HONORS SHILOH MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH HISTORY

A replacement Texas Historical Commission marker stands outside Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church after a March 2022 tornado destroyed the original. The Rev. N.C. McCloud organized the church in 1885, and many of its first members were former slaves. Madison County Commissioners Court funded the replacement.
